SCIENCE BASED DESIGN PRESCRIPTIONS FOR YOUR HOME AND OFFICE.
If you want to make your home a happier more inspiring place for you and your family and your office a space where you excel, you’ve come to the right place.
The Space Doctors is founded by two lively PhDs: Sally Augustin and Vanessa Champion based half in the States and half in the UK.
Did you know we spend more than 90% of our lives inside?
The Space Doctors will show you how to craft interiors where you feel better and achieve more in ways that matter to you – whether that’s developing solutions to the world’s great problems, or recreating your grandma’s apple tart recipe or keeping your kids from prematurely making you and your partner empty nesters. Have more harmony in your life. Improve your focus, productivity, increase creativity, be happier and improve your wellbeing, all by applying design-related neuroscience findings.
Why good design matters…
We invite you to join our members only platform where you’ll learn how to design a home to live the life you love, an office to inspire, why colour matters, how to shift your furniture so you are less stressed, why you should bring in a plant or six into your workspace, how and why you should design “biophilically,” why you shouldn’t paint your kitchen a warm colour if you’re trying to lose weight… and loads more all based on science.
The Space Doctors’ design recommendations are based on science, real science, done by trained professionals in a rigorous way. Our suggestions are drawn from articles published in the peer-reviewed press. That means people not involved in the original research have checked over the math and methodology reported in the article, as well as conclusions drawn, before the reports are published. You can feel confident working with insights pulled from this sort of verified material.
The science behind good interior design
Environmental psychology is the scientific study of how the design of places, and the objects in them, influence our thoughts and behaviours and ultimately affect our mental and physical wellbeing. Environmental psychologists have learned the details of what, when, why, where, and most importantly, how particular experiences and outcomes are linked. Recommendations from The Space Doctors are an effective way to generate unique insights and powerful design options that make the life you’ve planned more likely – you can apply the “how” related findings, previously available to only a few academics and improve your home with our “Design Prescriptions”, whether that’s with paint colour, textures, room layout or something else. You’ll have a powerful resource with us here at The Space Doctors, using science to live the life you always dreamed of.
We review solutions such as how Biophilic Design can be used in your home and office to enhance your lifestyle
At The Space Doctors, we’re particularly committed to biophilic design.
Biophilic design applies the same sorts of design principles in today’s built environments that were naturally present in the outdoor settings where we were at ease eons ago, when our bodies took on their current form. We still feel comfortable in biophilic spaces today, and the sorts of experiences that we have in biophilically designed spaces boost our cognitive performance, for example, and for some of us even enhance the performance of our immune systems. Our brains continue to positively respond to the sorts of sensory stimulations that long ago signalled good times, or at least that bad times were unlikely, Implementing biophilic design into your space can make you 15% more creative, 6% more productive and have a 15% higher level of wellbeing?
Come and join us and enjoy exploring how science and design all come together to help transform your home, offices and spaces

Dr Vanessa Champion
Vanessa Champion PhD, is an academic with a particular focus on biophilia and creating virtual photographic and video naturescapes for interiors. She is founder and editor of The Journal of Biophilic Design the popular design podcast series and online magazine which also published Nature Art Photography to help give a new perspective, a new view, some space, life and air to as many people as possible whether they are at home, in hospital, co-working, sitting in a boardroom or just need some “time out” to help them make another day with a better point of view and mindset.
Ness started life as an academic lecturing at UCL in Greek and Latin, specialising in epigraphy, art and architecture, linguistics. Her foundation in analysis of the written word combined with extensive research and enquiry into how architectural and urban spaces not only reflect the use they are employed to do but how they are decorated and designed internally can shape their developed use and how they are received.
As a specialist in imagery, Ness is an international professional documentary photographer and film-maker and was one of the inaugural nominees for the 100 Heroines in Photography for the work she has done establishing the PhotoAid Global Foundation [www.photoaid.org.uk]. Ness has sat on various boards as Trustee within the arts and heritage sectors and is a Lord Taverner. She has worked with the BBC, ITV, History Channel, AXA, Lloyds, NHS and others. She also ran a specialist London Newspaper with a 50k distribution around the city and then launched in Edinburgh.
Ness is now combining all of this to work with Sally to show you how good interior, biophilic design can make a complete difference to your life. To show that using colour, textures, light, sound, movement in your home to improve your space isn’t just soft design “puff” but that it is based on extensive research and science.
