Moving furniture, changing curtains, one step at a time…..

When one season is transitioning to the next, acknowledge the passage of time! Make a few changes to the places where you spend time.

A few changes don’t mean make everything different. That sort of flipping everything around makes us unhappy.

Reposition the furniture, change out the placemats or the throw pillows, maybe shift from heavy weight to light weight curtains (or vice versa).

Humans are much more comfortable in spaces that are slightly different sometimes from other times but stay fundamentally familiar. We like continuity because it’s just plain easier, our brains don’t have to work quite as hard.

Using materials that age gracefully, like leather, or develop a patina, as copper does, saves you some work—they change gradually all by themselves!

Acknowledging that time marches on is one of the primary tenets of biophilic design—nature is not exactly the same day after day, and for our brains to do their best work, the places that we create for ourselves shouldn’t be either.
