The Way we Work Now…

Megan Tatum has written an interesting article for the BBC online about the importance of aligning workplace options with user mindsets (“The People Who Hate Working from Home,” 2022, https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20220616-the-people-who-hate-working-from-home).  Tatum’s article is written in the context of hybrid work and who has the most positive and negative responses to “hybriding.”

In The Space Doctor’s we’ve talked about how to design workplaces where people’s professional performance and wellbeing and mood and ability to get along with others is best, here for example, and also how to design to support different personality types, for instance here.

In her article, Tatum shares, for example, that “lots of people looking to bag a remote working role right now – but there are also plenty of people who are just as keen to get back to the office. According to a 2022 study by PwC, 11% of US workers would prefer to work full-time in the office, and 62% said they’d like to spend at least some time there. . . . The motivations of these people might vary – some long for the sociability of the office, while others prefer a clear boundary between work and home. But regardless, companies will need to work out how to accommodate the needs of people who want to be in offices as well as those who don’t, as they map out their post-pandemic working models. . . . loss of connection and lack of structure can have a profound impact for some people.”
