Open the windows!

It’s open window time, pretty much worldwide!  As long as you live in a place with clean air, there’s no time like the present to let some fresh air in.

  • Lots of people like to open the windows to their home because it makes the air in the rooms smell better—which is nice all by itself—but is particularly important because an important part of most of our self-identities is being a clean sort, and it’s hard to get a room smelling really fresh without opening those windows.
  • A slight breeze can make the temperature in our home seem more pleasant, even if it is actually the same whether the windows are open or closed.
  • When the space we’re in is well ventilated our brains work better—our memories function more effectively as does the rest of the stuff between our ears.
  • When the windows are open you can, hopefully, hear gently rustling leaves and other nature sounds, which is good for our wellbeing.
  • When you’re setting up that chair to catch the breeze, make sure you sit facing the window not away from it—studies have shown if your face is hit by the current of air you’ll feel more energetic and think more creatively (which for most of us would probably be a good thing, whether we’re trying to write a novel or figure out how to deal with our kids’ latest adventures) than you will if that breeze falls on the back of your head.
