How to fix an Odd-space?

If your odd space is wrong-sized there are things you can do to alter how big or small it feels that don’t involve paint.
  • A more brightly lit space seems larger than a less brightly lit one, for example. If your odd space has a window, opening the drapes wide will increase daytime light levels, make the area seem larger, and supply all the benefits of natural light, discussed here.
  • Sitting in your odd spaces so you have the longest sightlines available will also help it seem a little bigger.
  • If the space left to enter your odd space is a little dimmer light-wise, your odd space will seem slightly bigger.
  • Taking things, such as pieces of furniture, etc., you don’t use or that don’t fit with what you intend to do in the area, out of your odd space can also make it seem larger.
  • If you’ll be creating a door, do so in a way that maximizes the amount of usable floor space to help an area seem larger.
  • If the ceiling in your odd space seems lower, and is below about 10 feet, you can make the space seem larger by taking out any suspended ceilings you can, higher ceilings make a space seem larger.
  • Cooler light makes a space seem a little larger and warm light leads it seem a little littler.
  • While you’re fiddling with the lighting: a space with a more even distribution of light will seem larger than one with more variations in lighting intensity, lighter and darker areas.
  • If your odd space is too small, use patterns on walls that are smaller scale; larger patterns will make a space seem smaller.
  • Rougher wall textures will make a space seem slightly more spacious but can be hard on the elbows if the area is tiny.
  • Adding a scent to a tiny space, particularly the smell of green apple, makes that area seem just a little bit larger. In general, to make people feel comfortable, scents linked to open spaces, such as the smell of the sea, can make a location feel a little bit bigger while smells linked to cosy conditions, such as the smell of firewood/a fire, will lead it to feel slightly smaller.
  • If all else fails: mirrors on walls make a space seem larger—and if you have the space, bookshelves with few or no objects on them make a space seem larger.
