Windowless dorms? Really?

Did you see all the discussions in the news about Charlie Munger’s windowless dorm? We speak elsewhere on The Space Doctors site about the basic human need for natural light (circadian rhythms, stress, mental refreshment, cognitive performance, creativity) but also here, we are thinking about the students ability to study.

With all the discussions and disbelief, it seems people (at least most people) have finally gotten the message that natural light is good for what goes on in their heads – it can help us de-stress and re-fresh mentally, along with supporting our efforts to think creatively, just for starters. It is a basic human need.

A recent news article about windowless dorms being built under the direction of their funder has incited quite a respectable amount of ire (see the article in Guardian here). Bravo! At least newer plans for the dorms are credited with some jazzy tools to try to compensate for the lack of windows, but that doesn’t get discussed too much. If they really do build it, have a read of some of the plans to put in fake windows.

There is much more we could say about this! A whole issue!
