There are particular hues that we’re much more likely to see at the end of the year and in related celebrations than others. Don’t be surprised if they have you feeling in very particular ways.
Red
Looking at the colour red, even very briefly and in small amounts degrades our ability to think analytically. It is the colour we associate with danger/warning and looking at it gives us a momentary burst of strength. When we see someone that we might be attracted to romantically against a red background we’re more likely to find them attractive, a benefit that’s likely to be particularly important during our next major holiday, Valentine’s Day.
Green
Looking at green boosts our ability to think creatively, which has advantages whether you’re trying to write great poetry or respond to your Aunt Betty who’s asking what you think of her (actually quite dastardly) new haircut.
Blue
We associate the colour blue with trustworthiness, competence, and dependability, so beware if Uncle Joe asks you about investing in his new project while wearing a blue tie. We also link the colour blue to sleep and rest, which we often don’t have a chance to get enough of at this time of year.
Silver/Gold
As humans, we prefer shiny to matte surfaces which always gives gold and silver a very special place in our hearts. We can also link these colours to the ideas of opulence and plenty.
